What is a Texas Catheter?
Texas Catheters differ from external catheters in that they commonly come with a self-adhering elastic foam strap or Velcro strap to assist in keeping the catheter in place and not falling off during the day. We carry many Texas Catheters from top manufacturers like Kendall, Urocare, Posey, and Rusch.

Indications

Texas Condom Catheters are advisable for use as an alternative to indwelling intermittent or foley catheters for both chronic and temporary urinary incontinence in men. Specific indications for Texas condom catheter use include the following conditions:

  • Safety concerns with unsupervised or unassisted toilet use
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Urethral trauma
  • Reflexive voiding from spinal cord injuries
  • Damage to sphincter from prostatectomy
  • Unmanageable urinary frequency or urgency
  • Limited access to toilet from dementia, impaired vision, or decreased mobility

Contraindications

Foregoing these few contraindications, use of a Texas Catheter are typically a great option for external catheterization.

  • Latex of adhesive allergies. Texas condom catheters are available without latex and adhesive.
  • Complications with the penile shaft or the glans penis:
    • Ulcers
    • Open lesions
    • Other skin irritation
  • Phimosis and paraphimosis
  • Catheter induced hypospadias

Texas Catheter Sizing

It's important to order the correct Texas Catheter size to ensure successful catheterization and prevent constriction or the catheter falling off. We have provided a Texas catheter size guide to help you get an accurate diameter measurement. Here you can get the sizing guide .
Print the guide and cut out the colored notches. Place the notch of the guide just behind the glans penis and select the size which offers the best fit.

If you are unable to print out the guide but have a flexible tape measure, you can determine the diameter of the penis by first measuring the circumference (c) of the penis in millimeters and then making use of this formula:
Circumference multiplied by 7 and then divided by 22. (Cx7)/22.

Application

To ensure successful Texas Catheter use, proper application is crucial.

  • Any residual creams or adhesives should be fully removed.
  • Using soap and water, clean the penis thoroughly and dry completely.
  • If a skin protectant is required, apply the protectant and wait until it has dried fully before applying the Texas condom catheter.
  • During Texas catheter application, leave the foreskin in its natural position; down

Texas Catheter Application Suggestions

  • Avoid using moisture barrier creams if the Texas Catheter you're using has an adhesive.
  • Shaving pubic hair can cause skin irritation and is not recommended. Trimming long hair is advisable along with the use of a hair guard. If you do not have a hair guard, a paper towel with a hole cut in the middle can be used during catheter application and removed once it is in place.
  • Adhesive tapes should never be used to keep a Texas Catheter in place. They can cause trauma to the penis and cause the catheter to malfunction.
  • Keeping an eye on the Texas Catheter throughout use can help catch problems like penis constriction and kinks in the collection tube before they become a concern.

Texas Catheter Removal

The type of Texas Catheter being used and the patients skin sensitive can vary catheter wear times by quite a bit. Common wear times are between 12 and 72 hours and should be re-evaluated periodically to ensure continual successful use.

  • Unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer, remove the catheter daily for cleaning and skin inspection.
  • Removal of the Texas condom catheters with adhesive can easily be done by soaking with a warm washcloth for 30 seconds.

Texas Catheter Complications

Complications which occur with Texas Catheter use can most often be attributed to either an equipment malfunction or to user error. The majority of complications can be avoided by understanding the correct application procedure and keeping good hygiene.

  • Allergic reaction
  • Edema
  • Skin tears
  • Penile erythema, dermatitis, pruritus, maceration
  • Inflammation of the glans penis
  • Ischemic tissue injury
  • Bacteriuria and urinary tract infection

Troubleshooting

The Texas catheter falls off
  • The sizing might be incorrect, check out our Texas condom catheter sizing guide. The penis can vary in size according to changes in temperature and position so try measuring the penis in the position it is commonly in when the Texas catheter falls off.
  • The strap may not be tight enough.
  • If the penis retracts while in certain positions, a shorter Texas catheter may facilitate.
  • Allow for an increase in penis size for nocturnal erections.
  • Make sure there is only a small space between the drainage port and the end of the penis so if urine pools and backflows it can break the seal between the Texas catheter and skin.
  • If possible, avoid using moisturizers, creams, or powders that can affect the adhesion of the condom catheter.

There is no urine in the bag
Inspect the following common issues:

  • The Texas catheter is twisted or dislodged
  • The tubing is kinked or obstructed
  • The Texas condom catheter is too tight and is applying pressure to the urethra
  • The Catheter strap is too tight and constricting the urethra
  • A vacuum can sometimes occur at the end of the Texas catheter and can prevent drainage. Break the vacuum by briefly disconnecting the drainage and allow urine to begin draining.
