Medline TheraHoney Gel Honey Wound Gel is a healing gel that facilitates and speeds up the healing of burns or wounds. The wound filler uses the unique properties found in Manuka Honey to keep the wound clean and healthy for an optimal healing environment. Made from 100% Manuka Honey that has been filtered and tested for efficiency, TheraHoney Wound Dressing to reduce the odor of wounds in addition to speeding up the healing process. TheraHoney Dressing can be used underneath most absorbent wound dressings and can also be used with compression therapy or while undergoing negative pressure treatments.
How does TheraHoney Gel work?
Applied to a wound, the high sugar level found within the Manuka honey induces osmosis, pulling liquid out of the wound. With liquid pulled away from the interior of the wound, bacteria (which require liquids) are unable to survive, grow or reproduce and reduces the risk of infection. The osmosis also reduces the amount of dead tissue, reducing the surface are of wounds. Honey also helps to lower the pH level of wounds, which has shown multiple benefits, such as increasing antimicrobial activity and reducing the overall toxic environment of the wound for faster healing.

Manuka Honey comes from a plant in New Zealand. Manuka Honey is harvested and derived from the pollen and nectar of the Leptospermum Scoparium plant. The unique properties can even vary from plant to plant, so there is a grading system to determine the uniqueness, known as the UMF or Unique Manuka Factor. The higher the number, like SPF in sunscreen, the higher the benefits. Manuka Honey is believed to be up to four times more powerful that regular honey. In addition to the above benefits of honey, the Manuka has anti-inflammatory properties, reducing swelling. TheraHoney Gel Honey is made of 100% medical grade Manuka Honey, with nothing added to dilute the potency. After harvesting, the honey is carefully filtered irradicated and tested in a laboratory for efficiency.
Application Process
Remove TheraHoney Wound Gel from its packaging, and remove the foil protection. Be sure to always use gloves or an applicator when applying the gel depending on your state or facility guidelines. After cleaning the wound and using a skin protectant, apply TheraHoney Gel either directly to the wound or on the dressing. The gel should be about as thick as a nickel across the surface of the wound when finished. The wound should be covered with an absorbent secondary dressing such as the Stratusorb, the Optifoam Gentle or the Optilock. Remove excess gel by washing either with saline or wound cleanser. It is safe to leave the dressing on the wound for up to seven days. During dressing changes, if TheraHoney has been diluted or has disappeared, reapply the gel for best results.
