Who Uses This Product? Nipple Shields are designed for breastfeeding mothers who need help with common latch-on issues.
Why Give It a Try? It's a simple answer to latch-on difficulties so that moms who want to breastfeed their baby can do so with less frustration.
Overview: When to Use
Medela Contact Nipple Shields, 16, 20, 24 mm are placed directly over the nipple to provide a larger and firmer surface area for the baby to latch onto. This breastfeeding product is recommended by lactation consultants and pediatricians when there are latch-on difficulties. This can be due to a flat or inverted nipple shape or when the baby has initial latch-on difficulties during the first week as the skill isn't fully developed. Another latch-on difficulty is when there is an overactive breastmilk let-down, causing the baby to choke and latch off. The Medela Contact Nipple Shields slows down the flow so the baby can continue feeding without interruption. A nipple shield can also make breastfeeding more comfortable when the nipple is sore and causing breastfeeding challenges.
Medela Nipple Shields are made of thin silicone with a unique cut-out pattern to create skin contact during feeding. Note: Do not confuse Nipple Shields with Breast Shields that work with breast pumps, which attach to the breast to maximize milk flow while pumping.

What Size to Choose
Medela Contact Nipple Shields come in three breast shield options to achieve a comfortable fitting and outcome, which are: Medela 16mm Nipple Shield, Medela 20mm Nipple Shield, and Medela 24mm Nipple Shield. The millimeter is the diameter measurement of the nipple only and not the areola. A Contact Nipple Shield is too small if there is discomfort or pinching. Work with a lactation consultant to select the best size.
How to Use
Before and after each use, clean the nipple shield with mild soap and water. Dry the case and dry all parts before storing the shield. For hospital use, sterilization can be performed using an autoclave. Have clean and dry hands before handling a shield and touching the breast. Prepare the breast tissue by wiping the skin with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use soap or alcohol on the skin or nipple or it can lead to the nipple cracking.
- To apply, moisten the perimeter of the nipple shield to help it adhere to the skin.
- Push the tip so that it's almost inside out.
- Center the shield over the nipple with the contoured open section pointing up which is typically the direction of the baby's nose during breastfeeding.
