What Is a Bariatric Mattress?

Introduction

A bariatric bed is wider and more durable than a typical hospital bed to accommodate heavier individuals. Bariatric mattresses fit these larger, heavier-duty frames. They are commonly found in hospital, clinic, and rehabilitation settings, as well as in homes based on a patient’s care needs.

Dimensions

For comparison, the average bed is about 39 inches wide and 80 inches long; bariatric beds tend to be 40 to 60 inches wide and nearly 90 inches long. Convertible bariatric beds adjust these dimensions to accommodate patients weighing up to 1,000 lbs.

Selecting a Bariatric Mattress

  • Make sure the material is thick enough to support the patient’s weight for extended periods.
  • Make sure the material is still flexible and responsive, so that the patient can comfortably sit up and get out of bed.
  • Make sure the mattress spreads out the user’s weight over a larger area to reduce pressure sore risks.
  • Look for a heavy-duty mattress that’s both stain-resistant and waterproof.
