Littmann Classic III Stethoscopes Overview
3M Littmann Classic III Stethoscope is a versatile tool for diagnosis. This stethoscope has the capability to work with both adult and pediatric patients. Unlike the Cardiology IV, it is not designed specifically for one particular sound or another. It allows you to use the stethoscope for a variety of uses, such as the heart, lungs, bowels or blood pressure. The tunable diaphragm allows you to listen for high or low frequency sounds with a slight change in pressure and can also be removed on the pediatric side to have an open bell structure.
3M Littmann Classic III Monitoring Stethoscope is easy to clean and as a result is able to last. It comes with a five year warranty as a result. Constructed of an aluminum alloy and PVC, the 3M Littmann Classic 3 contains no latex or phthalate plasticizers to reduce skin irritation for both you and patients. When using the open bell, patients will also appreciate the non-chill rim that increases the comfort while looking for a diagnosis. Unlike many other stethoscopes, the Classic 3 comes in a variety of colors and finishes for an individual and fashionable touch.

Advantages of Using a Tunable Diaphragm
- A tunable diaphragm allows you to be consistent. Placement of the 3M Littmann Classic III Stethoscope does not have to change just to listen for higher or lower frequencies. With more or less pressure placed in the same location, you are able to isolate sounds for a more accurate diagnosis.
- With less time in between sounds from changing and/or moving the chestpiece, it is easier to compare the sounds using both high and low frequencies.
- Not having to move the chestpiece makes a tunable diaphragm incredibly convenient.
Properly Caring for your 3M Littmann Monitiring Stethoscope
- Do not store in high or low extreme temperatures
- Use soapy water or a 70% Isopropyl Alcohol Cleaning Wipe to clean after each use
- Periodically deep clean by removing eartips, diaphragms and rims
How to Fit and Use the Classic III Stethoscope
- For the best fit, adjust the tension of the headset to a comfortable angle. This is done by pulling the eartubes apart to loosen or pushing them together to tighten.
- Ensure an airtight fit when placing the earbuds n the ears for optimal sound.
- Determine if you need to listen for higher or lower frequency sounds, then use the double sided chestpiece accordingly. Pediatric/open bell side for lower frequencies and larger diaphragm for higher frequencies.
- Apply the correct amount of pressure. Low frequency does not require any pressure beyond skin contact. Higher frequencies will require more pressure, but just enough to make a slight indentation on the skin.
Tips for How to Fully Optimize the Sound
When listening to faint sounds, it is important to make sure even the little details are in order to produce the best quality sound. The following details are small things, but can make a large difference in making a diagnosis:
- Make sure the headset is properly inserted into the ear. The fit should be comfortable and the earbuds should create a seal to block as much outside noise as possible. The earbuds should point slightly forward.
- In order to create a proper seal, consider if you need large or small eartips. They are also available in hard or soft for comfort.
- Using the correct side of a double sided chestpiece helps when listening for high frequency or low frequency sounds. Be sure to double check the side you are using.
- Routinely cleaning your stethoscope removes anything that can inhibit sound waves, such as dirt or lint.
- Always double check that your stethoscope has an airtight seal when in use if the sound is not coming through. The eartips must have an airtight seal, and check for loose parts in the chestpiece. Loose or cracked tubing can also prevent the needed airtight seal for optimal sound.
